The Social Security and National Insurance Trust is ramping up regional forums to educate contributors on the workings of the national pension scheme and promote transparency, according to Director-General Kwesi Afreh Biney.
Speaking at the 2026 joint SSNIT and Trades Union Congress regional forum in Koforidua, Mr Biney said the initiative is designed to bring SSNIT closer to workers and address misinformation that often leads to disputes.
“Understanding the scheme, its benefits, and its financial position reduces disagreements,” he noted, highlighting that SSNIT has maintained over six decades of uninterrupted pension payments and has grown its asset base by more than 25 per cent between 2024 and 2025.
Currently, SSNIT has 2.1 million active contributors, far below Ghana’s estimated 15 million-strong workforce. Mr Biney stressed the need to extend coverage to the informal sector, which represents over 80 per cent of workers. He also showcased innovations like the virtual branch, co-location with banks, and digital services that make accessing pension information more convenient.
Joshua Ansah lauded the forum for empowering workers to track their pension benefits and called for discussions on raising contribution levels to ensure retirement security. He emphasized that every worker deserves a dignified retirement.
The regional forums, part of a national campaign themed “Empowered Unions, Secure Futures,” also addressed issues such as contribution reconciliation, identity verification, and processing delays, highlighting SSNIT’s commitment to enhancing pension literacy and ensuring financial sustainability for retirees.
