Abuakwa South Constituency is emerging as a trailblazer in foundational STEM education, led by the pioneering efforts of its Member of Parliament, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang. Now in its sixth year, the annual Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz has become a transformative educational platform, targeting students at the basic school level and significantly enhancing learning outcomes in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The quiz, which brings together 78 Junior High Schools and 92 primary schools—including schools for the deaf—has become a flagship academic event in the municipality. The goal is clear: to embed STEM skills early in learners’ academic journeys, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application.
According to the Municipal Director of Education, Madam Comfort Ofori Appiah, the impact of the initiative is tangible. She cites a direct correlation between participation in the quiz and improved results in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
“All our top BECE performers in 2024 were finalists in the quiz. The data speaks volumes. This initiative has redefined academic excellence within Abuakwa South,” she stated.
Beyond grades, the competition cultivates soft skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, and public speaking—preparing students not just for exams but for life. Early participants have gone on to represent their schools at the National Science and Maths Quiz and secured placements in top universities abroad, including Memphis University in the United States.
Dr. Agyemang believes such outcomes validate his investment in STEM. “The world is advancing rapidly in technology, and Ghana cannot afford to be left behind. We need to prepare our youth for the future, and that starts now,” he emphasized.
