Ghana’s maritime industry takes a major leap forward with the inauguration of the Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) Maritime Training Center at the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra.
This state-of-the-art facility, a product of collaboration between BSM—a leading global maritime solutions provider—and RMU, aims to equip maritime professionals with the skills needed to meet expanding industry demands both locally and regionally.
The training center, boasting modern amenities including classrooms, workshops, a mooring station, and accommodation facilities, underscores Ghana’s commitment to strengthening human capital in the maritime sector. Since 2012, BSM has recruited over 600 cadets from RMU, a number expected to grow as the company consolidates its presence in Ghana.
Speaking at the inauguration, Alhaji Fanday Turay, Chancellor of RMU, praised the partnership as a vital investment in Ghana’s maritime future. He emphasized the alignment between RMU’s educational mandate and BSM’s industry goals, highlighting the facility’s role in preparing a new generation of maritime experts.
Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, hailed the center as a symbol of unity and progress. He reiterated the government’s vision of positioning Ghana and the West African sub-region as leaders within the global maritime value chain by fostering education, employment, and industrial growth.
Mr. Ian Beveridge, BSM Chairman, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to quality training and job creation for Ghanaian seafarers. He assured stakeholders of continued investment in Ghana’s maritime infrastructure, aligning with BSM’s global reputation across diverse shipping sectors.
RMU’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr., emphasized the critical role of academia-industry partnerships in ensuring graduates are well-prepared and effectively deployed in the sector. He appealed for further support to expand student accommodation to meet rising demand.
The ceremony concluded with a guided tour of the facility led by Captain Joshua Addo, BSM Country Director and RMU lecturer, where dignitaries expressed confidence that the training center would enhance Ghana’s standing as a maritime hub and contribute significantly to regional development.
