As World Tuberculosis (TB) Day approaches on March 24, the call for urgent action to combat the disease has intensified, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for increased awareness, investment, and improved service delivery.
Mr. Samuel Atidzah, Executive Director of GOSANET Foundation, has highlighted persistent gaps in TB prevention and treatment, particularly in underserved communities such as Adaklu in Ghana’s Volta Region. Despite advancements in TB control, numerous cases remain undiagnosed, fueling transmission and mortality.
According to Mr. Atidzah, stigma, inadequate access to diagnostic services, and limited awareness continue to hinder efforts in effectively tackling TB. He stressed that this year’s World TB Day theme, “Yes! We can end TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver”, should serve as a rallying point for governments, civil society, and health workers to accelerate efforts towards eliminating the disease.
GOSANET Foundation, a frontline health NGO in the Volta Region, has been playing a pivotal role in strengthening TB control. The organization conducts community-based screenings, awareness campaigns, and collaborates with local health facilities to improve diagnostic and treatment access. Additionally, it engages community leaders and volunteers to combat misinformation and stigma while advocating for increased policy support and funding.
Mr. Atidzah stressed that eliminating TB requires coordinated efforts at multiple levels. “More than words are needed—we must commit to strong policies, invest in sustainable healthcare systems, and ensure high-quality TB services reach vulnerable communities,” he stated.
He further urged the government and development partners to increase funding for TB programs and called on communities to support affected individuals by promoting treatment adherence. He also encouraged health workers and volunteers to enhance case detection and management.
“TB is preventable and curable. With the right commitment, investment, and strategic action, Ghana can make significant strides in eradicating this disease,” Mr. Atidzah affirmed.
GOSANET Foundation remains dedicated to bridging the gaps in TB control efforts, working hand-in-hand with local and national stakeholders to ensure a future free from TB.
