In an inspiring move to embed sustainability into the fabric of education, Vivo Energy Ghana, in collaboration with McKingtorch Africa and United Way Ghana, has offered pupils from La Enobal Basic School a rare opportunity to witness how environmental challenges can be transformed into practical solutions through innovation.
The visit formed part of Vivo Energy Ghana’s Green4Clean Schools Renewable Energy Project, a pioneering initiative that fuses climate education, renewable energy awareness, and environmental stewardship among school children.
Classroom Meets Climate Innovation
At the McKingtorch Africa Recycling Facility, pupils observed first-hand how discarded plastic waste is repurposed into useful everyday items such as school desks, chairs, sandals, clocks, and more. Guided tours and interactive demonstrations transformed what would have been abstract environmental concepts into tangible lessons on recycling, innovation, and the circular economy.
“This isn’t just a tour — it’s a lesson in transformation,” said one teacher accompanying the students. “Our pupils are now seeing waste not as a burden, but as a resource.”
Corporate Commitment to Education and Sustainability
To further the impact of the visit, Vivo Energy Ghana purchased a number of school desks made from recycled plastics to be donated to under-resourced public schools. This gesture underscores the company’s dual focus on education access and environmental sustainability.
Mr. Christian Li, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, highlighted the importance of early exposure to green innovation:
“When we educate children about sustainability and show them what’s possible through recycling, we’re not only creating future leaders — we’re shaping a more resilient planet. Our partnership today echoes our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on education and climate action.”
Empowering Local Innovation
Makafui Awuku, Founder and CEO of McKingtorch Africa, praised the collaboration, noting the significance of corporate support in scaling grassroots innovation.
“Vivo Energy Ghana’s purchase of our products and this student engagement programme validate our work. We believe that with the right partnerships, recycling can go beyond awareness and truly change lives.”
A Platform for Growing Impact
More than just a one-off event, the tour set the tone for deeper collaborations between Vivo Energy Ghana and McKingtorch Africa, particularly in integrating recycling and renewable energy education into Shell service stations and community schools.
Plans are underway to pilot additional community-based sustainability projects, including on-site recycling stations, environmental education clubs, and infrastructure improvements using recycled materials.
Green Learning, Greener Future
The Green4Clean Schools project continues to champion green innovation as a cornerstone of education reform in Ghana, equipping young minds with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration to build a climate-conscious future.
As the plastic crisis deepens globally, this initiative offers a hopeful narrative — one where education meets innovation, and where corporate and community actors converge to shape a cleaner, more sustainable Ghana.
