The recent stability between the Nkonya and Alavanyo communities is being hailed as a key driver for local development, according to Madam Jean-Marie Formadi, Member of Parliament for Biakoye Constituency. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), she attributed the prevailing peace to the collaborative efforts of government authorities, traditional leaders, and community members.
Madam Formadi expressed optimism that the current calm would be maintained, allowing both communities to redirect energy from past conflicts toward socio-economic growth. She noted that historical tensions had previously overshadowed opportunities for development and often defined the communities’ identities.
“When you Google Nkonya, Alavanyo, what comes next is conflict. Similarly, when you Google Alavanyo, Nkonya, what comes next is conflict,” she remarked, highlighting how the communities’ narratives had long been associated with disputes.
The MP emphasised that ongoing engagement with traditional authorities, the youth, and other stakeholders was critical to preventing future disturbances. She warned that any attempts to disrupt the peace would be seen as criminal acts and dealt with according to the law.
Madam Formadi also highlighted the deep social connections between the two communities, including intermarriages and shared cultural practices, which have historically created strong family ties. She said such bonds must be strengthened to foster cooperation, unity, and sustainable peace.
She praised her collaboration with Mr Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, Member of Parliament for Hohoe Constituency, in working to prevent conflict and create an environment conducive to development. Both leaders have focused on supporting youth engagement and traditional leadership to consolidate peace.
Residents of Nkonya and Alavanyo have welcomed the focus on unity, expressing hope that ongoing peace-building initiatives will enable community-driven projects and enhance economic opportunities. Madam Formadi stressed that meaningful development can only flourish where peace prevails, and she pledged continued commitment to dialogue and cooperation.
With decades of conflict now giving way to collaboration, the two communities are increasingly positioning themselves to pursue development initiatives and build a more prosperous future together.
