TUC Condemns Job Cuts, Urges Government to Protect Workers’ Rights

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has strongly condemned the ongoing termination of public sector appointments, calling on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and protect the livelihoods of affected workers.

The union argues that the dismissals—targeting teachers, nurses, and other professionals—pose a severe threat to economic stability and social trust, especially among young Ghanaians who have already struggled to find employment after years of education.

Concerns Over Youth Unemployment

The TUC has warned that the terminations could worsen Ghana’s unemployment crisis and lead to growing disillusionment among the youth.

“The mass termination of employment of teachers, nurses, and others, who have been educated at great cost to their families and the nation and who may have stayed at home for years struggling to obtain employment, can be devastating for these young men and women,” the union stated.

The directive, issued by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah on February 10, 2025, mandates all government institutions to revoke appointments made after December 7, 2024, citing concerns over good governance practices.

However, the TUC has pushed back, insisting that the decision unfairly punishes workers who were legitimately hired and had no control over the timing of their appointments.

Impact on National Morale and Governance

Beyond the economic consequences, the union warns that these dismissals could undermine trust in Ghana’s governance system and erode confidence in the country’s democratic values.

“This will be the greatest political settlement of the 4th Republic. It will ripple in eternity and reset the politics of Ghana,” the TUC stated, suggesting that such actions set a dangerous precedent for future administrations.

As pressure mounts, all eyes are on the government to see whether it will reconsider its stance or stand firm on its directive. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for employment policies and political stability in Ghana.
