The opposition United Party (UP) has launched a sharp attack on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing its leadership of prioritising political celebrations over the urgent economic struggles facing Ghanaians.
The criticism comes as NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and President John Dramani Mahama continue nationwide “Thank You” and “Resetting Ghana” tours following the party’s victory in the 2024 general elections.
Head of Legal for the UP, Andrew Appiah Danquah, argued that the tours send the wrong message at a time when many citizens are battling rising living costs, unemployment and economic uncertainty.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 23, he questioned the relevance of post-election appreciation tours when many Ghanaians expect immediate governance solutions rather than political engagements.
According to him, the most meaningful way for the NDC government to thank voters is through policies that directly improve livelihoods and address the country’s mounting challenges.
“Thank us by solving our problems. That is the best ‘Thank You,’” he stated.
Mr. Appiah Danquah maintained that while political parties have the right to engage supporters after elections, governing parties must recognise that public expectations shift immediately after assuming office.
He warned that prolonged political tours risk creating the impression that the government is more focused on political optics and internal party consolidation than on delivering results.
The UP legal chief further argued that ordinary Ghanaians are less interested in victory celebrations and more concerned about jobs, economic recovery, improved public services and relief from financial hardship.
His comments add to growing opposition criticism over the NDC government’s early post-election activities, as pressure mounts on the administration to demonstrate concrete progress on campaign promises and economic reforms.
