US-Based Royal Family Member Alleges Judicial Misconduct in Longstanding Ghanaian Land Dispute

Nana Osei Bonsu, a senior figure of the Huahi Achama Tutuwaa Royal Family of Boadi currently residing in the United States under humanitarian parole, has formally petitioned Ghana’s Acting Chief Justice over alleged serious judicial irregularities surrounding a protracted land dispute in the Ashanti Region.

The dispute involves an ancestral allodial landholding exceeding 1,298 acres in Benimasi-Boadi, with particular focus on a contested 114-acre parcel at the center of ongoing court battles. Nana Osei Bonsu contends that his family’s land rights face existential threats amid what he describes as systemic failures in Ghana’s judiciary.

In the petition, filed under Article 125(4) of the 1992 Constitution, he highlights disturbing claims including the unexplained reversal of court decisions, loss of critical court records, manipulation of filing dates, and intimidation of his legal counsel. Despite full compliance with court procedures over four years, his appeal remains unheard in the Court of Appeal in Kumasi.

The petitioner further alleges that interference from the Kumasi Traditional Council has complicated efforts to secure fair legal representation locally. As a result, Nana Osei Bonsu requests the transfer of the appeal to the Court of Appeal in Accra, an independent inquiry into the conduct of judicial officers involved, and the formation of an impartial panel of judges to oversee the case.

While reaffirming his faith in Ghana’s judiciary, Nana Osei Bonsu emphasizes the urgent need for corrective action to halt what he terms a “miscarriage of justice” and to prevent entrenched judicial delays and manipulation in land-related cases affecting influential parties.
