Ms. Maribel Okine, Western Regional Director of Gender, has emphasized the need for a united and comprehensive approach involving multiple stakeholders to effectively tackle the issue of Streetism.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Ms. Okine highlighted the importance of strengthening family support systems, improving access to education, and implementing community-based initiatives.
She stressed the significance of collaboration among government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community leaders, as well as regional cooperation to share best practices in addressing the problem.
Ms. Okine also underscored the role of education in teaching young people essential skills such as peaceful conflict resolution, emotional regulation, empathy, and active listening to cultivate a stronger communal spirit.
Furthermore, she urged the public to avoid giving alms to beggars on the streets, recommending that support be channeled through structured and effective programs instead. “By working together, we can address Streetism and promote peace, understanding, and respect in our community,” she concluded.
