The much-anticipated trial of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, begins today, Tuesday, October 7, 2025, drawing significant national attention as it intersects politics, law, and environmental accountability.
The case, which has sparked intense debate across political circles, stems from allegations of illegal mining activities linked to Akonta Mining Limited, a company reportedly owned by Chairman Wontumi. The charges include operating a mining concession without a valid licence — an accusation he has strongly denied through his legal team.
Wontumi’s appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Monday, October 6, 2025, followed a directive from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine. After hours of questioning, he was granted bail set at GH¢1 million ahead of his court appearance.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the case centres on “mining without a license,” but insisted that the full facts would be tested in court. “We will go to court, and that is where the decision will be taken. We are not here to maintain guilt or innocence in the media, but to let the law take its course,” he stated.
The trial has become a litmus test for the government’s resolve in fighting illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, especially when allegations involve politically connected figures. Analysts suggest that how this case unfolds could either reinforce or undermine public confidence in Ghana’s justice system and environmental governance.
Meanwhile, the NPP’s leadership in the Ashanti Region has remained largely silent, as party loyalists rally around their embattled chairman, describing the case as “politically motivated.”
As proceedings begin, all eyes will be on the court to determine whether the fiery regional chairman — known for his controversial public statements and strong political influence — will be vindicated or held liable under Ghana’s mining laws.
