In a renewed effort to curb illegal mining activities, the Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce from the National Police Headquarters has arrested 17 individuals during a raid at Samreboi in the Western Region.
The operation, conducted on Sunday, May 25, 2025, led to the arrest of seven Chinese nationals and ten Ghanaians, all suspected of engaging in illegal mining — commonly known as galamsey. According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service, the suspects were immediately transported to Accra to aid in further investigations.
The latest swoop is part of a broader national campaign to clamp down on environmental degradation, particularly in forest reserves and water bodies threatened by illegal mining activities.
“The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in its support for national efforts to combat illegal mining,” the statement noted, adding that intensified surveillance and enforcement actions are underway in other high-risk areas.
The statement also hinted at ongoing intelligence-led operations to identify networks, financiers, and facilitators behind illegal mining, reaffirming the Service’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
The arrests mark another significant development in the government’s multi-agency approach to tackling galamsey, amid growing concerns over its destructive impact on the environment, public health, and sustainable development.
