Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sharply criticised what he describes as the heavy-handed tactics and excessive bail conditions imposed on New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who remains in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Leading a delegation of Minority MPs to EOCO’s Accra office in a show of support, Afenyo-Markin said the agency’s handling of the case undermines basic legal rights and constitutional protections.
He condemned the GH₵50 million bail condition and the requirement for two sureties to justify the amount, calling it punitive and disproportionate.
“Wontumi must be freed now. He is not a flight risk. He should be admitted to self-recognisance bail,” Afenyo-Markin argued. “The so-called GHS50 million bail is unreasonable and outrageous.”
The MP further questioned the manner in which Wontumi was apprehended, describing it as “military-style.”
“He wasn’t even invited. They used Rambo-style tactics to arrest him. This is not justice—it is intimidation,” he said.
Wontumi was arrested on May 27 over an investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving EXIMBANK. The arrest and subsequent bail conditions have ignited political tension and raised broader concerns over the independence and fairness of state investigative bodies.
The Minority Caucus insists their protest is not an attempt to shield anyone from accountability but a call for lawful, transparent, and fair treatment.
EOCO has yet to respond to the criticism or provide further details about the case.
