Mr. Ahmed Abdulai, Assembly Member for Kwesi Plange Electoral Area in Tema, was assaulted while attempting to manage heavy traffic caused by road rehabilitation in Tema Community One.
On Thursday afternoon, Mr. Abdulai, who regularly helps direct traffic to ease congestion during the ongoing Tema Harbour Road repairs, intervened when trucks blocked alternative routes in the busy Kwasia-Dwaaso area.
When a truck driver refused to follow his directions to use the Maame Sekunde route, a confrontation escalated. Mr. Abdulai tried to stop the vehicle by holding onto the truck’s door, but the driver sped off and later struck him on the head with a large stone, causing a cut and bleeding.
The driver, who had a passenger that fled the scene, later apologized. Authorities were notified, and the driver was apprehended and handed over to the Tema Community One Police. Mr. Abdulai sought medical treatment at Tema General Hospital.
The incident raises concerns about the risks local officials face while assisting with traffic management amid infrastructure projects impacting daily commuters.
