Ghana Tourism Authority Unveils Exciting Activities for Heritage Month Celebration

As Ghana gears up to celebrate Heritage Month in March, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has lined up a series of engaging activities to highlight the country’s rich cultural heritage, promote local businesses, and encourage domestic tourism.

This year’s celebration holds special significance as Ghana marks its 68th Independence Anniversary. The festivities will showcase everything uniquely Ghanaian—food, fashion, tourism, arts, and culture.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, Deputy Director of Domestic Marketing at GTA, emphasized the importance of celebrating Ghana’s heritage through active participation. He outlined a robust marketing and communication strategy designed to encourage citizens to embrace local products and experiences.

“This is a time to ‘See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, and Feel Ghana.’ Our initiatives are tailored to immerse Ghanaians in their culture in an interactive and meaningful way,” Mr. Kusi stated.

One of the highlights of this year’s celebration is the “Taste 68 at 68 Food Fair”, scheduled for March 14 at the historic Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. The event will feature 68 varieties of Ghanaian cuisine, celebrating the nation’s culinary diversity.

“This food fair is more than just a feast; it’s an opportunity to showcase the health benefits of Ghanaian dishes. Our local meals are packed with nutrients essential for good health, and we want to emphasize their importance in daily life,” Mr. Kusi explained.

Dishes such as jollof rice, fufu, and other regional specialties will be on display, giving visitors a chance to savor the unique flavors of Ghana.

Alongside the food fair, the Heritage Month celebrations will feature exhibitions of local products, including traditional clothing, crafts, and music. This initiative aims to support local artisans and businesses, reinforcing the significance of Ghana’s creative industry in the national economy.

As part of efforts to boost domestic tourism, GTA is collaborating with the Tour Operators Union and Tour Guides Association of Ghana to offer affordable travel packages.

“There are countless beautiful and historic sites in Ghana, from Cape Coast Castle to Kakum National Park and the Ashanti Kingdom. We want Ghanaians to embrace these attractions and connect with their heritage,” Mr. Kusi noted.

By making domestic tourism more accessible, GTA hopes to encourage more citizens to explore their country’s breathtaking landscapes and cultural landmarks.

This year’s Heritage Month coincides with Pan-African Month, aligning with the government’s flagship initiative, the Black Star Experience. This initiative seeks to position Ghana as the gateway to Africa for the global diaspora, further strengthening the country’s appeal as a cultural and tourism hub.

GTA’s regional offices will also play a key role in promoting local culture and heritage, engaging communities across the country in the celebrations.

Mr. Kusi acknowledged the support of key partners, including Ceejay Multimedia (Akwaaba Festival), Channel One TV, and Citi FM (Heritage Caravan), in driving the campaign forward.

He urged Ghanaians to actively participate in the celebrations, support local businesses, and take pride in the rich heritage that defines the nation.

“Heritage Month is a time to reflect on our history, celebrate our identity, and invest in our own economy. Let’s come together to make this year’s celebration truly remarkable,” he concluded.
