Adu-Boahene’s Lawyer Rejects Plea Bargain Rumours, Vows to Fight Charges in Open Court

Lead counsel for embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has firmly rejected suggestions that his client is seeking a plea bargain in his ongoing criminal trial.

Speaking on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV, lawyer and Member of Parliament Samuel Atta Akyea dismissed the speculation, insisting no negotiations with the Attorney-General’s office have taken place.

“No, I don’t know whose invention that is. The prosecution hasn’t even disclosed the evidence against us yet. So where is this talk of a plea bargain coming from?” Atta Akyea queried.

He stressed that plea discussions are premature at this stage of the trial, given the prosecution only filed its key witness statements on June 3 — a day after the deadline set by the court.

“The material that forms the foundation of the case — the witness statements — only arrived this week. Until we see what exactly we are dealing with, there is no basis for plea bargaining. This idea isn’t from my client,” he emphasized.

Adu-Boahene, along with his wife Angela Adjei-Boateng, associate Mildred Boateng, and their company Advantage Solutions Limited, is facing charges of stealing, conspiracy, and causing financial loss to the state.

The witness statements submitted include those of lead investigator Frank Marshall Cromwell, NSB finance director Edith Ruby Opokua Adumua, and Frank Anane Dekpey, an alleged assistant to the accused.

The prosecution’s delays in filing disclosures have drawn judicial scrutiny. On May 26, the Accra High Court instructed the defence team not to pursue any plea negotiations until the full scope of the case had been disclosed by the prosecution. Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai had requested more time, citing the temporary unavailability of a key investigator.

Atta Akyea said his client is prepared to contest all charges publicly. “We are confident in our case. We will meet the prosecution squarely in court,” he stated.

The next hearing is set for June 11.
