Three newly elected independent Members of Parliament—Kwame Asare Obeng (Gomoa Central), Ohene Kwame Frimpong (Asante-Akim North), and Stanley Yaw Nandaya (Wulensi)—have officially communicated their intention to collaborate with the Majority Caucus in Parliament, confirming a significant realignment of parliamentary strength.
During a recent sitting, the trio submitted formal letters to the Speaker of Parliament, notifying him of their decision to caucus alongside the Majority. Their move follows similar alignments by other independents, further bolstering the Majority’s influence.
Independents have been pivotal players in the 8th Parliament, which now assumes office following the NDC’s dominant win in the 2024 general election .
The shift by these independents comes after months of speculation and discussion regarding their political affiliations. Notably, Kwame Asare Obeng, a popular musician-turned-politician also known as “A‑Plus,” made clear his inclination toward the NDC-majority caucus shortly after winning the Gomoa Central seat .
Lekewise, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the newly elected MP for Asante-Akim North, had previously signaled his intention to join the NDC bloc even before officially taking his seat on 7 January 2025 .
Stanley Yaw Nandaya, the independent MP for Wulensi, also completed the process by delivering his letter to the Speaker, aligning with the Majority Caucus.
This consolidation boosts the Majority’s legislative strength and secures additional support for key bills.
By incorporating these independents, the Majority Caucus consolidates its position, reflecting a growing trend: other independents, including Worlasi Kpeli of Afram Plains North, have made similar alignments in recent weeks .
Why it matters:
Strengthened legislative power: With the independents now aligned, the Majority Caucus increases its voting capacity on parliamentary business.
Strategic consensus-building: This alliance may enhance the government’s ability to secure support for its policy agenda in vital debates and committee decisions.
Political endorsements: The move reflects the orientation of these independents toward the NDC’s broader legislative goals, despite their initial unaligned status.
