Mahama Rallies Global Support in Brussels For Vaccine Equity & Gavi Replenishment

President John Dramani Mahama has taken Ghana’s leadership voice to the global stage once again—this time in Brussels—where he is advocating for renewed international commitment to vaccine equity at the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity through Immunisation.

The summit, co-hosted by the European Union, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Gavi Vaccine Alliance, brings together global policymakers and philanthropists to secure funding for Gavi’s ambitious 2026–2030 agenda.

In a statement released by the presidency and signed by Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Mahama’s participation is described as both strategic and symbolic, reinforcing his decade-long commitment to accessible immunisation, particularly in the Global South.

Health as a Global Public Good

President Mahama’s focus is on securing the future of vaccine access in lower-income countries, a challenge Gavi aims to tackle by targeting the immunisation of 500 million children and preventing 8 million deaths over the next five years. The plan also includes preemptive protection against up to 150 disease outbreaks.

“For Ghana and Africa, vaccines are not optional—they are lifesaving. Gavi’s work underpins our fight for health equity and global security,” President Mahama remarked ahead of the summit. “Investing in immunisation is an economic decision, a health priority, and a moral responsibility.”

Ghana’s Immunisation Legacy

President Mahama’s appearance in Brussels builds on Ghana’s impressive vaccination history. Under his leadership, Ghana expanded its immunisation coverage, including the roll-out of the pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines, which significantly reduced child mortality.

His personal commitment to Gavi’s mission dates back to 2013, when he first aligned Ghana’s national priorities with global efforts to broaden vaccine access.

A Billion-Child Milestone, But More Ahead

Since 2000, Gavi has facilitated the vaccination of more than 1 billion children and prevented nearly 19 million deaths. Its public-private model has also delivered over $250 billion in economic value to beneficiary countries.

President Mahama’s role in Brussels is not limited to summit participation. He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with high-level partners, including EU Council officials and philanthropist Bill Gates, to help unlock further donor commitments and strengthen the vaccine financing ecosystem.

Looking Forward: Global Responsibility, Shared Gains

The summit’s goals reflect a broader push to treat immunisation as a cornerstone of sustainable development. If fully funded, Gavi’s next phase could yield over $100 billion in global economic benefits while strengthening pandemic preparedness.

As one of Africa’s leading statesmen, Mahama’s voice carries moral weight in making the case that health equity must be at the heart of global solidarity. In his words, “Every child, no matter where they are born, deserves protection. Let this summit remind us that no one is safe until everyone is.”
