In a bid to simplify the passport application process for Ghanaian Muslims embarking on the sacred Hajj pilgrimage, the government has established a dedicated passport centre exclusively for Hajj applicants. The initiative, announced by Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is aimed at streamlining travel preparations and ensuring a hassle-free experience for pilgrims.
Speaking at the Hajj Village on Tuesday, March 4, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the government’s commitment to making essential services more accessible. He acknowledged the long-standing challenges many applicants face in securing travel documents on time and assured that this intervention would address those concerns.
“To address this, our ministry has set up this special passport centre, operational from March 4 to March 13, 2025, exclusively to serve Hajj applicants,” he stated.
Beyond simplifying the process, the government has also taken steps to make the service more affordable. The cost of expedited passport processing has been maintained at a subsidized rate of ¢500, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder eligible pilgrims from completing their documentation.
To further enhance accessibility, the Foreign Ministry is extending the initiative beyond Accra by setting up dedicated kiosks at regional passport application centres, allowing applicants from other parts of the country to benefit.
The initiative has been met with widespread approval from the Muslim community, with many lauding the government’s proactive approach in easing travel preparations for Hajj pilgrims.
This move aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s broader vision of ensuring efficient and timely public service delivery for all Ghanaians, regardless of their background or location.
