The Western Central Regional Police Command has dealt a significant blow to illegal mining activities in the area, arresting 17 individuals and confiscating critical mining equipment in two targeted operations.
The coordinated raids, conducted on Thursday at Adamaso and Wassa Mamieso, demonstrate the police’s escalating commitment to curbing the environmental and economic damage caused by galamsey.
At Adamaso, 12 suspects ranging in age from 19 to 45 were apprehended, including Abraham Antwi (26), Jeremiah Adusei (37), and others. Authorities also seized five pumping machines, vital tools commonly used in illicit mining operations.
Meanwhile, intelligence-led efforts near the Mamie River in Wassa Mamieso led to the arrest of five additional suspects, including Junior Simon (21) and Stephen Tetteh (30). Law enforcement officials confiscated a ‘Sunny Excavator 215 Control Board,’ further disrupting illegal mining capabilities in the area.
All suspects are currently detained and cooperating with police investigations. The seized equipment remains in police custody as authorities pursue further inquiries.
This latest enforcement action reflects Ghana’s ongoing crackdown on illegal mining, which threatens the country’s natural resources, water bodies, and local communities’ livelihoods. The police command has reiterated its resolve to dismantle galamsey networks and uphold environmental laws in the region.
