Celebrating a Legacy of Compassion and Impact: Prof. Mabel Oti-Boadi Honoured by Community and Mentorship Circles

It was an emotional and heartfelt moment on Sunday as family, friends, students, and professional colleagues came together to celebrate the extraordinary journey of Professor Mrs. Mabel Oti-Boadi — a woman whose career has transcended academia to touch lives across generations and communities.

Held in the Adentan Municipality, the event marked her recent promotion to Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Ghana, but the gathering quickly transformed into something more — a celebration of her legacy of compassion, mentorship, and community advocacy.

From seasoned members of the 50 and Counting Club — a respected social group of elders in the Adentan community — to bright-eyed members of the Positive Impact Club, a student mentorship group she founded, guests took turns sharing how Prof. Oti-Boadi had changed their lives.

For many, the academic milestone was merely the tip of the iceberg. “She doesn’t just teach, she uplifts,” said one of her former students. “She sees potential in us long before we see it in ourselves.”

Prof. Oti-Boadi’s work in mental health, particularly her research on women’s and adolescents’ psychological well-being and support for families with children living with disabilities, has won her national and international recognition. A licensed clinical psychologist, she is known both in scholarly circles and in underserved communities.

She currently holds prestigious fellowships, including one with the Fox International Fellowship at Yale University and another with the Center for Suicide and Violence Research-Ghana (CSVR). She is also affiliated with the Pan-African Gender Integration Platform under the Gender Malaria Policy and Advocacy Project, as well as the Center for Gender Studies and Advocacy and the Center for Ageing Studies at the University of Ghana.

But beyond her academic accolades, Prof. Oti-Boadi has become a beacon of hope for families navigating disability. As a board member of the Inclusive Family Alliance, she has advocated for inclusive policies, empowerment programs, and access to support services for parents of children with special needs.

“She walked with us, when society looked away,” one parent said tearfully. “She gave us a voice when we had none.”

Her philanthropy also speaks volumes — every year on her birthday, Prof. Oti-Boadi visits orphanages and special needs communities with donations, offering not just material support but also the reassurance that someone sees and values their humanity.

Sunday’s celebration was marked by poetry, music, testimonies, and moments of reflection. Colleagues from academia acknowledged her contributions to the discipline of psychology, noting her numerous peer-reviewed publications and her pivotal role in expanding clinical psychology in Ghana.

Yet, in her own remarks, Prof. Oti-Boadi remained characteristically humble. “This is not a celebration of me,” she said. “This is a celebration of the communities that shaped me, the students who inspire me, and the families who remind me of the power of resilience.”

As she continues her work at the intersection of mental health, education, and social advocacy, Prof. Oti-Boadi stands as a reminder that true success is not only measured in titles, but in the lives one touches — one act of kindness, one word of encouragement, and one inclusive policy at a time.
