Gifty Oware-Mensah, the former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), is expected to be taken into custody by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) upon her arrival at Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday afternoon.
Oware-Mensah, who oversaw administration and finance at the NSS, has been linked to an ongoing investigation into a massive payroll fraud scheme that allegedly siphoned GH₵50 million from state funds each month. The NIB is probing how thousands of ghost names were reportedly used to manipulate the system and pay fraudulent allowances.
Sources indicate that while she has expressed her willingness to cooperate with investigators, security agencies are preparing to detain her for interrogation upon her return. Her arrest follows the recent detention of Kwaku Ohene Djan, another former Deputy Executive Director of the NSS, as part of the same probe.
Meanwhile, key figures within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are reportedly mobilizing to escort her from the airport to the NIB’s offices, signaling strong political interest in the case.
The government has also initiated extradition processes to bring back other suspects who are believed to have fled the country to avoid prosecution. It remains unclear how long the alleged fraudulent scheme operated and how many officials may be implicated.
With the investigation intensifying, all eyes are now on the NIB as Gifty Oware-Mensah prepares to face questioning in what could be one of Ghana’s biggest financial scandals in recent years.
