Rev. Dr. Striggner Bedu-Addo, Head of Legal Metrology at the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), has recently been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Geophysics, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished career and underscoring GSA’s ongoing commitment to scientific advancement and technical expertise.
Dr. Bedu-Addo’s doctoral research, presented at this year’s GSA scientific conference, delves into the sophisticated Model-Based Offset Scaling Technique and its effects on Amplitude Variation with Offset (AVO) responses derived from 3D seismic data in the Tano Basin, offshore Ghana. His study highlights the critical importance of preserving unstacked seismic data for precise geological interpretation, with findings that include the identification of a Class II AVO anomaly indicating potential oil reservoirs.
Utilizing spectral balancing and synthetic modeling techniques, his work offers valuable insights into how seismic amplitude should be adjusted—by as much as 16 percent in far-offset ranges—enhancing the reliability of hydrocarbon exploration efforts. The research reinforces the necessity of integrating seismic data with well logs to improve accuracy.
A seasoned physicist with over 15 years at GSA, Dr. Bedu-Addo brings extensive experience across several departments including Industrial Metrology and Information Technology. Holding multiple advanced degrees—Bachelor of Science in Physics, and Master’s degrees in Telecommunications Engineering and Petroleum Geoscience—he now adds a PhD from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to his credentials.
Beyond his research contributions, Dr. Bedu-Addo is an active leader in the regional metrology community, serving as Vice President of ECOWAS Metrology (ECOMET) and spearheading key national projects aimed at elevating Ghana’s metrology infrastructure. As Technical Lead for the GSA-PTB project, he is driving efforts to establish a National Metrology Institute (NMI) and improve the calibration and verification standards for electrical energy meters.
His vision centers on positioning Ghana’s metrology institutions to meet international standards, fostering innovation, and supporting the country’s industrial growth through enhanced measurement science.
Dr. Bedu-Addo’s achievement symbolizes the GSA’s dedication to nurturing homegrown expertise and promoting a culture of research and excellence within the national standards ecosystem.
