Mahama Champions Unity and Accountability at National Prayer Day

President John Dramani Mahama used the solemn occasion of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on July 1 to deliver a stirring call for unity and integrity, placing national cohesion at the heart of Ghana’s quest for transformation.

Addressing a diverse gathering of religious leaders, politicians, and citizens in Accra, President Mahama warned of the destructive power of tribalism, religious intolerance, and political polarization. He urged Ghanaians to reject divisive rhetoric and embrace a shared national identity rooted in mutual respect and collective purpose.

“Tribalism, extremism, and political bitterness are the weeds that choke our national spirit. We must guard against them with vigilance,” he said. “In our words and actions, let us choose healing over harm, peace over provocation.”

The president’s remarks came at a time of increasing political tension and social fragmentation, with many looking to national leadership for reassurance and direction. Mahama seized the moment to reaffirm not only a vision of unity but also one of accountable governance.

In a bold declaration of principle, he reminded the nation that no public servant — not even the head of state — is above the law.

“Public office is not a ladder for personal gain. It is a sacred trust. And even the office of the President, which I now hold by the grace of God, is not beyond the reach of justice and truth,” Mahama stated.

He also acknowledged the significance of the day, describing it as a national moment for reflection, renewal, and commitment to values that bind rather than divide. The president emphasized that Ghana’s strength lies in its diversity and its ability to rise together in the face of challenge.

The event, themed “Reflect, Reset and Renewal for National Prosperity,” marked a symbolic turning point in the country’s spiritual and civic life. Leaders from all major faith traditions joined hands in prayer, affirming a shared hope for peace, moral leadership, and national development.

As the nation looks toward a future shaped by economic reform and institutional transformation, Mahama’s message was clear: unity, integrity, and accountability must be the foundation.
