Gold Fields Ghana Steps In to Rebuild Deplorable Budo-City Road, Residents Hope for Timely Completion

Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has launched a major road reconstruction project in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, targeting one of the area’s most dilapidated transport arteries—the 2.1-kilometre stretch from New Atuabo through Budo-City Junction to Bogoso Junction.

Residents and motorists have long decried the poor state of the road, which serves as a critical alternative route when the main Tarkwa Station–Bogoso Junction corridor is congested. For years, potholes, erosion, and flooding during the rainy season have rendered the road not only inconvenient but dangerous.

But that may soon change.

On Saturday, July 5, a sod-cutting ceremony marked the official start of reconstruction, with residents expressing both relief and cautious optimism. Many commended Gold Fields for finally addressing the long-standing issue, while others urged the Foundation to ensure the project’s timely and full completion.

“We’ve suffered for years,” said Samuel Tetteh, a local driver. “But we’re hopeful this isn’t just another promise. We want to see tar on this road, not just gravel and half-finished work.”

Another driver, Kweku Asumang, stressed the road’s strategic importance:

“It’s not just about us. This road is essential for easing traffic in the whole municipality.”

Abdel Razak Yakubu, Executive Secretary of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, assured the public that the GHS11.6 million project is fully funded and resourced. He emphasised the company’s commitment to infrastructure development in host communities.

“We don’t just extract resources—we reinvest in the communities. This road will improve mobility, reduce congestion, and directly benefit economic activity in the area,” he stated.

Issah Salifu, Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, praised the initiative and called it a strong example of private-sector support for national development.

“This is how public-private partnerships should work,” he said. “Government alone cannot meet every infrastructure need, and Gold Fields is showing true leadership here.”

The contractor, Woodbine Ventures, pledged timely delivery and asked for community cooperation throughout the construction period.

The project is expected to be completed in two years, and for many locals, the countdown has begun—not just to a new road, but to restored trust in development commitments.
