New Police Recruits Poised to Drive National Development and Security Sector Transformation

Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its internal security apparatus and supporting socio-economic transformation was once again on display as 238 new police officers graduated from the Volta Regional Police Training School in Ho.

The fresh recruits, including 31 Under Cadets and 207 General Recruits, are expected to bolster ongoing national efforts to modernize and professionalize the Ghana Police Service.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Daniel Kwame Afriyie, Director-General in charge of Private Security Organizations, who reviewed the parade, positioned the recruits as vital instruments in delivering on Ghana’s development goals, including the successful implementation of the 24-Hour Economy policy recently launched by the government.

“The Police are central to Ghana’s progress. National development cannot take place in the absence of law, order, and a sense of security,” he said. “That is why we have established a 24-Hour Economy Security Secretariat at the Police Headquarters—to ensure robust coordination of security as Ghana shifts to round-the-clock economic activity.”

The comprehensive training programme offered to the recruits combined theory and practice, blending Police Science, Law, and Social Sciences with intensive field training in public order management, disaster response, swimming, driving, and tactical operations.

COP Afriyie praised the new officers for their discipline, smartness, and mental preparedness, describing their display during the parade as “a clear demonstration of their readiness to serve the nation diligently.” He further noted that their academic and field competencies positioned them to navigate the evolving landscape of law enforcement.

Modern Policing for a Changing Ghana

As Ghana’s security threats become more complex—with the rise in cybercrime, violent extremism, and inter-communal conflict—COP Afriyie underscored the need for a new generation of officers who are not just physically and mentally agile, but also ethically grounded and community-oriented.

He acknowledged the reform agenda championed by Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, noting that the Service is reviewing its operational strategy, revitalizing specialized units, and addressing critical challenges such as staff morale and personnel shortages.

“Our goal is to shape a modern, professional, and people-centered Police Service,” COP Afriyie said. “It is not enough to enforce the law—we must do so with fairness, integrity, and respect for the rights and dignity of every citizen.”

He reminded the recruits that their authority comes with responsibility and cautioned against abuse of power. “The badge you wear is a symbol of service, not intimidation. Your duty is to protect, not to oppress.”

Strengthening Police-Public Collaboration

COP Afriyie also stressed that security is a shared responsibility. He called on the public to support policing efforts through cooperation and the timely sharing of credible information.

“To every crime committed, there is always a witness. Cultivating public trust is essential to effective law enforcement,” he stated, encouraging the public to not only hold the police accountable but also partner with them in safeguarding communities.

G/Recruit Emmanuel Amedome-Reigns emerged as the Overall Best Recruit for the 2024/2025 intake, earning praise for excellence in both academics and field performance.

The graduation ceremony was attended by a cross-section of dignitaries, including Volta Regional Minister Mr. James Gunu, Ho Central MP Mr. Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, senior police officials, representatives of other security agencies, and families of the recruits.

As Ghana charts a new path toward inclusive economic growth and national stability, the graduation of a new class of police officers serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to institutional renewal, youth empowerment, and responsive public service.
