Tema Youth Drive Economic Empowerment Through Vocational Skills

In an inspiring show of self-determination and economic foresight, many young people in Tema are turning to vocational training as a strategic pathway to employment, entrepreneurship, and community development.

Faced with rising youth unemployment and the high cost and duration of traditional academic education, these determined youth are actively embracing hands-on training in trades such as carpentry, hairdressing, and barbering—equipping themselves with in-demand skills that feed directly into the local and national economy.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA), in a series of interviews with trainees and artisans, found that the appeal of vocational training lies not only in its practicality but also in its immediate relevance to the job market.

“Vocational training offers a direct route to employment, especially in high-demand sectors. You spend less time in school and more time mastering real skills that pay,” said Daniel Ofori, a carpenter who now runs a growing furniture business. “The trades are evolving with technology, and there’s an increasing demand for skilled hands.”

Across Tema, training centres are buzzing with young people committed to redefining their future. From beauty salons to metal workshops, these youth are not just learning trades—they’re building livelihoods.

Mr. Kwame Arhin, a barber, emphasized the broader social benefits of vocational training. “Skilled training is empowering young people in the community to become self-reliant. When youth are productive, the entire community benefits—there’s less crime, more income, and better standards of living.”

The transformative power of technical skills was also echoed by Madam Gifty Opoku, a hairdresser and mentor to several apprentices. She highlighted the long-term career opportunities for vocational graduates. “Many of my trainees have opened their own salons or gone abroad to work. The potential for growth is enormous, especially when you build your craft and expand your knowledge.”

Madam Opoku encouraged young people to consider vocational and technical education as a viable career path, urging them to research available programmes, understand market demands, and align training with their personal interests and strengths.

Her advice reflects a growing sentiment among education advocates and development planners that vocational and technical education (TVET) is crucial to addressing Ghana’s youth unemployment and skills gap.

The Ghanaian government has in recent years stepped up investment in TVET infrastructure and curricula, with initiatives aimed at making technical training more accessible and aligned with industry needs.

As the global economy shifts toward practical innovation and skills-based labour, the young men and women of Tema are proving that the future belongs to those who are ready to work with their hands—and their minds.
