In a significant milestone for Ghana and the wider African Christian community, Professor Robert Osei Bonsu, a respected theologian and seasoned church leader, has been elected as one of the Vice Presidents of the global Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church during its ongoing General Conference Session in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
The elevation of Prof. Osei Bonsu to this global position highlights the growing influence of African leadership in international Christian organizations. He becomes only the second Ghanaian in the SDA Church’s history to attain such a high-ranking office at the General Conference level, following in the footsteps of Pastor Matthew Bediako, a former Secretary to the global body.
Until his election, Prof. Osei Bonsu served as President of the SDA Church’s West-Central Africa Division (WAD), which oversees church operations in 22 countries across West and Central Africa. His time at the helm saw remarkable growth and innovation within the division, including the launch of “WAD IMPACT 2025,” a transformative evangelistic and social initiative that prioritizes youth empowerment, family strengthening, and community outreach.
Under his leadership, the Division saw a five percent membership increase in a single year, with over 42,000 baptisms recorded, despite navigating complex political and social environments.
Beyond his administrative roles, Prof. Osei Bonsu is known for his academic contributions. He has served as Associate Professor of Historical and Theological Studies and Dean at the Adventist University of Africa in Kenya, and as Pro-Vice Chancellor and Rector at Valley View University in Ghana.
His deep commitment to mission work and holistic ministry was evident during a visit to Burkina Faso in 2024, where he engaged with both church and development partners, including the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), to promote peace and social transformation.
Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Nana Sifa Twum, a Media Consultant and Elder of the SDA Church, described the professor’s new role as not just a personal achievement, but a reflection of Ghana’s growing footprint in global faith leadership.
“Prof. Osei Bonsu’s rise is historic and inspiring,” Dr. Twum said, “and it underscores the depth of leadership talent and theological insight that Ghana continues to contribute to the global Church.”
He added that the new Vice President would likely use his platform to champion theological integrity, doctrinal soundness, educational advancement, and youth development across the global SDA community.
As the SDA Church strengthens its global leadership team, Prof. Osei Bonsu’s election signals a new chapter of African involvement at the highest levels of church governance—one rooted in faith, scholarship, and visionary service.
