In a crackdown on fare regulation breaches, authorities in the Central Tongu District have arrested a 28-year-old commercial driver, Egey Desire, for flouting the government’s directive on reduced transport fares.
The arrest, carried out through a coordinated operation by the Central Tongu District Police and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), marks a significant step in enforcing recent nationwide fare reductions aimed at easing the cost of living for Ghanaians.
Desire, who was driving a vehicle with registration number GT 1578 T along the Ho–Adidome route, was caught overcharging passengers — demanding GH₵40.00 instead of the approved GH₵35.00.
His arrest follows mounting complaints from commuters who expressed frustration over the continuous disregard for the new fare structure, despite repeated public announcements and passenger appeals.
Some passengers who were onboard the vehicle at the time of his arrest told the Ghana News Agency that they had persistently called on drivers to respect the revised fare rates, but their concerns were ignored.
“This has been going on for weeks. We ask the drivers to reduce the fare, and they tell us fuel prices are still high,” one passenger lamented.
In a joint statement, the Police and NIB underscored their resolve to intensify enforcement operations across the district and other parts of the region to ensure full compliance with the directive.
The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to appear before court in the coming days to face charges related to the violation of transport fare regulations.
Authorities have warned that similar enforcement actions will continue and urged transport union leaders to sensitize their members to avoid legal consequences.
The public has also been encouraged to report violations promptly to help clamp down on defiant operators and protect commuters from exploitation.
This incident shines a spotlight on the growing tension between economic pressures faced by commercial drivers and the government’s efforts to regulate transport fares — a delicate balance that remains under close scrutiny.
