Ghana has been chosen as one of seven Global South trailblazers to host a United Nations Global Compact Ocean Centre, the Ghana Network announced ahead of its late‑July inauguration in Accra. This initiative—backed by the UN Global Compact and Lloyd’s Register Foundation—follows the global rollout at the Third UN Oceans Conference in Nice, France.
Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Mbiah, Country Lead for the Ghana Ocean Centre, said the platform will unite government agencies, businesses, and civil society to craft homegrown policies that advance Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). Initial efforts will target four critical blue‑economy sectors: ports and shipping, fisheries and aquaculture, blue finance and investment, and offshore renewable energy.
“By fostering public–private partnerships, we’ll embed safety and sustainability at the core of Ghana’s marine industries,” Dr. Mbiah explained. The Ocean Centre will host workshops and stakeholder forums to co‑create standards that balance economic growth with ecological stewardship.
Stakeholders across maritime, banking, energy, and environmental spheres are invited to shape a locally led blue economy—one that safeguards coastal communities, preserves marine biodiversity, and unlocks investment for shared prosperity.
