Agradaa Challenges Conviction, Files for Bail Pending Appeal Over Alleged Judicial Bias

Convicted religious figure Patricia Asiedua, widely known as Evangelist Mama Pat or Agradaa, is seeking bail pending appeal, arguing that her recent conviction was marred by judicial bias and procedural irregularities.

Through her legal team, Agradaa—founder of the Heaven Way Champion International Ministry—has filed a formal application before the Amasaman High Court, contesting the 15-year sentence handed down by the Accra Circuit Court on July 3, 2025.

Her lawyers argue that the trial was riddled with “flaws and a clear display of bias” by the presiding judge, citing the court’s alleged failure to give due weight to mitigating factors presented during sentencing.

“The appeal has a strong chance of success due to the flaws that characterised the trial and the bias exhibited by the trial Judge,” the bail application stated, adding that the sentence imposed was both harsh and excessive, particularly given the judge’s own references to Ghana’s Sentencing Guidelines.

Agradaa was convicted on three counts, including engaging in charlatanic advertisement and two counts of defrauding by false pretences, offences related to her widely publicized spiritual and financial schemes that drew criticism from religious, legal, and civil society circles.

While her conviction was seen by many as a landmark ruling in cracking down on fraudulent spiritual activities, her legal team is now pressing the case as a test of judicial fairness and proportional sentencing within Ghana’s justice system.

The outcome of the bail application, and eventually the appeal itself, will be closely watched by both supporters and critics of Agradaa, as well as by legal observers following the increasing scrutiny of faith-based leaders who mix religious influence with financial schemes.

As the High Court prepares to hear the bail request, the case remains a lightning rod for broader debates on faith, fraud, and fairness in Ghana’s legal and spiritual landscape.
