Ghana’s Inflation Hits 3-Year Low as Policy Gains Momentum

Ghana’s inflation rate has hit its lowest level in nearly three years, signaling growing confidence in the country’s economic recovery efforts. But while the national picture looks promising, significant regional disparities continue to raise concerns about equitable economic relief.

Data released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) show that headline inflation fell to 12.1% in July 2025, down from 13.7% in June. This marks the seventh straight month of disinflation, and the lowest inflation rate recorded since October 2021—highlighting the effects of tight monetary policy and improving macroeconomic conditions.

The easing of inflation has been driven by broad-based price moderation. Food inflation fell to 15.1% (down 1.2 percentage points), while non-food inflation declined more sharply to 9.5%, dropping by 1.9 percentage points. Analysts say this reflects not only better supply chain stability but also consumer relief at the market level.

However, the national gains mask striking regional contrasts. The Upper West Region, for instance, remains an outlier with an inflation rate of 24.8%—more than double the national average. Though this represents a decline from 32.3% in June, it still points to persistent vulnerabilities in local pricing dynamics, possibly tied to transportation, infrastructure, and supply constraints.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Central Region recorded the lowest inflation at just 7.7%, suggesting that some parts of the country are experiencing a faster return to price stability than others.

As the Bank of Ghana prepares for its next monetary policy review, the sustained disinflation offers new room for potential interest rate cuts, which could lower borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. Yet, economists caution that any policy easing must account for regional inflation disparities, which may blunt the impact of national-level gains.

The data suggest that while Ghana’s fight against inflation is yielding results, the focus must now shift to ensuring inclusive disinflation—where all regions and income groups benefit from improved price stability.

With global commodity markets still volatile and climate impacts looming over food production, vigilance and targeted interventions will be essential to prevent a reversal of these hard-won gains.
