Motorbikes to Boost Maternal and Child Health in Ghana’s Remote Communities

Frontline health workers serving in some of Ghana’s most remote areas will now be better equipped to reach patients after 14 health facilities received motorbikes to enhance maternal and child health care delivery.

The intervention, part of a larger donation of 104 motorbikes from the United States Government under the Integrated Health Partnership Programme, is expected to transform access to healthcare in districts where poor road networks hinder timely medical support.

At a brief ceremony in Accra, Dr. Peter Yeboah, Executive Director of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), said the move was a vital step in reducing maternal and child deaths. “Trust is your biggest social capital as a health worker. These motorbikes should help you serve with dedication and win the confidence of your communities,” he urged the beneficiaries.

For medical teams on the ground, the motorbikes mean more than convenience—they represent life-saving access. Dr. Isabella Amese, Medical Director of the Baptist Medical Centre, explained that delays in transporting women with pregnancy complications often lead to avoidable deaths.

“Some of the communities are completely inaccessible by car. With these motorbikes, we can now expand health promotion, engage patients directly, and respond faster to emergencies,” she said.

The beneficiary hospitals span across northern, middle, and southern Ghana, including Baptist Hospital in Nalerigu, St. Joseph Hospital in Jirapa, Presbyterian Hospital in Agogo, and St. Martin’s De Porres Hospital in Ekwai.

Mr. George Adjei, Director of the Catholic Health Service Trust, Ghana, called on the facilities to use the motorbikes responsibly, in line with donor expectations.

Beyond equipment, CHAG leaders stressed that the donation aligns with the Christian mission of health care—serving the vulnerable with compassion. “This is about demonstrating the love of Christ through service,” Dr. Yeboah said.

For market women, farmers, and mothers in far-flung communities, the bikes may be the difference between delayed treatment and timely care.
