Residents of Keta Municipality have heaped praise on the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies for their professionalism and vigilance during the Akwatia by-election held on Tuesday, September 2.
The residents commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and his team for deploying over 5,000 officers across the constituency, a move they said was instrumental in preventing disturbances and guaranteeing order at polling stations.
Mr. Bright Xoese Nyadeka, a resident of Vui, said the smooth conduct of the polls was largely due to the discipline and commitment of the security services. He urged government to adequately resource the agencies so they can continue to deliver at the highest level.
Madam Sewoena Amezah added that the visible presence of security personnel helped calm tensions, assuring voters of their safety. She described the atmosphere as peaceful and encouraging, further boosting confidence in the electoral process.
The residents also acknowledged the support of the National Peace Council, which engaged political parties and security agencies in dialogue ahead of the election, helping to avert potential clashes.
The by-election was necessitated by the passing of MP Ernest Kumi. The Electoral Commission declared the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo winner with 18,177 votes, defeating the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu, who secured 15,249 votes.
