Former Akwatia Member of Parliament Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Sey, was selected as Deputy National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) partly because of her grassroots appeal and record of electoral success, National Women’s Organiser Mavis Hawa Koomson has said.
Hawa Koomson said Ama Sey’s victory in the 2016 parliamentary election, when she defeated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) incumbent, Baba Jamal, demonstrated her ability to connect with ordinary voters and mobilise support at the grassroots.
Speaking on Asaasepa Radio, she said the former MP’s political experience, resilience and commitment to party work were among the considerations that informed her choice.
She also cited Ama Sey’s representation of the Eastern Region as an important factor in the appointment.
“She is representing the Eastern Region, and secondly, she is a very hardworking woman,” Hawa Koomson said.
The NPP Women’s Organiser described Ama Sey as a dedicated party member who consistently delivers on assignments, recalling instances when she travelled late into the night to undertake party activities.
She further praised the former MP’s ability to withstand pressure and resist intimidation, describing her as a strong political figure.
“Ama Sey is no pushover. You cannot intimidate her,” she said.
Ama Sey, a hairdresser and businesswoman, entered Parliament after defeating Baba Jamal in the 2016 election to win the Akwatia constituency seat.
Hawa Koomson expressed confidence that the former legislator’s experience, determination and standing among party supporters would strengthen the NPP’s women’s wing as it prepares for future political activities.
