The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has given the government until November 3 to face renewed public pressure over the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and the issuance of diplomatic and service passports, announcing a nationwide demonstration to demand accountability.
The protest, dubbed “Y3gye Y3 Sika”, will focus on demands for the publication of expenditure records, passenger details and official documents relating to the two controversies, alongside calls for the dismissal of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Announcing the demonstration at a press conference on Thursday, the party’s National Youth Organiser, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, said public resources and official state documents must be managed transparently.
“The public money belongs to the people, so do the official documents of the Republic. The ministers hold them in trust, and when the trust is abused, it is the people who must rise and demand accountability,” he said.
The NPP wants the government to publish invoices, contracts and proof of payment for charter flights used in the evacuation exercise, as well as the full passenger manifest and beneficiary list for the reported 1,964 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa.
It is also calling for an independent audit of the total cost of the operation.
On the passport controversy, the party is demanding the publication of details of all diplomatic and service passports issued since January 2025, including the eligibility of recipients and the authorities that approved their applications.
It further wants any passports found to have been issued improperly cancelled.
The opposition party is also seeking investigations by the Attorney-General and the Office of the Special Prosecutor, with prosecution of the Foreign Affairs Minister and any other officials found culpable.
The NPP has accused Mr Ablakwa of wrongdoing in connection with the two matters, although the allegations have not been established.
The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 6:00 am on Tuesday, November 3, with participants assembling at Villaggio, near the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange and opposite Accra Mall.
The protesters are expected to march to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before ending the demonstration at Jubilee House.
Mr Yakubu urged party supporters, youth organisers, constituency and polling station executives, and women’s groups to participate, while insisting that the exercise would be peaceful.
“Our strength is in our numbers and our discipline, never in disorder,” he said.
The planned protest adds to the NPP’s broader criticism of the government over the evacuation and passport-related issues, as well as its separate calls for the resignation of the Minister for Youth and Sports over a visa controversy involving the National Sports Authority.
