Gov’t Accelerates Moves to Repeal Mining L.I. Amid Galamsey Concerns

The Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, has revealed that the government is taking swift steps to repeal the current Legislative Instrument (L.I.) on mining as part of efforts to address illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on JoyNews PM Express on Monday, March 10, Dr. Mohammed disclosed that the process to amend the existing law began just weeks after he assumed office. He stated that the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General has already reviewed the necessary documents, and the revised L.I. is expected to be laid before Parliament soon.

“The process started two weeks ago, shortly after I took office. I signed a letter to the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General, and after their review, they returned it to me for further approval. I signed the final document last Thursday,” he explained.

Dr. Mohammed emphasized that President John Mahama’s promises regarding illegal mining are based on a 120-day action plan, and with just over 60 days elapsed, the government remains on course to meet its commitments.

He criticized those who claim the government has failed in its fight against galamsey, arguing that the administration has been in office for only two months and should not be judged prematurely.

“The country has been dealing with galamsey for the past eight years. We have been in office for only two months, and we have just completed appointing ministers. It is unfair to say we have failed when we are already making progress,” he said.

Dr. Mohammed assured that the government remains committed to tackling illegal mining and fulfilling all pledges made within the 120-day period set by President Mahama.

“The L.I. repeal will happen as soon as possible, possibly within the week, depending on the parliamentary schedule. We made a promise, and we will deliver,” he affirmed.
