Agavedzi Uses World Tourism Day to Fight Coastal Erosion and Promote Green Tourism

In a creative fusion of environmental action and cultural celebration, the coastal community of Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality marked the 2025 World Tourism Day by planting 200 coconut trees—an initiative that doubles as both a climate resilience effort and a long-term tourism investment.

Located in Ghana’s Volta Region, Agavedzi is no stranger to the destructive power of tidal waves and coastal erosion. The coconut tree planting, spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, represents a grassroots solution that ties environmental sustainability directly to local economic and cultural empowerment.

Tourism Minister and Ketu South MP, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, emphasized the symbolic and practical value of the exercise.

“In coastal communities like Agavedzi, the coconut is not just a tree—it’s a legacy. It sustains families for generations and holds deep economic and cultural meaning,” she said during the ceremony.

The event, held under the global theme of World Tourism Day 2025, also served as a platform to promote awareness of the “blue economy”—a development strategy that focuses on harnessing marine and coastal resources to drive sustainable growth. Gomashie noted that much of Ghana’s coastline remains an untapped tourism asset.

“Our stretch from Aflao to Half Assini is a goldmine for tourism, but it’s underutilized. Clean, safe, and green coastal communities are key to unlocking that potential,” she added, calling on residents to take ownership of their environment.

The coconut trees, once matured, are expected to serve multiple purposes: stabilizing the shoreline, providing income for locals, enhancing the aesthetics of the beach for tourism, and preserving cultural traditions.

Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Nicholas Worclachie, praised the initiative, urging residents to support the Ministry’s broader tourism development agenda. He highlighted the event as a model for community-led development that blends culture, commerce, and climate action.

The tree planting also comes at a critical time, following the recent sod-cutting by President John Dramani Mahama for the second phase of the Agavedzi Sea Defence Project—a larger infrastructural intervention aimed at protecting the coastline.

Attended by senior officials from the Tourism Ministry, the event underscored a growing recognition that sustainable tourism in Ghana must be rooted in local action, particularly in climate-vulnerable regions.

As Agavedzi plants the seeds—literally and figuratively—for a greener future, the community hopes this year’s World Tourism Day will mark the beginning of long-term change: protecting its shores, uplifting its people, and inviting the world to experience its untapped coastal charm.
