Razak Kojo Opoku Cites Data to Challenge NDC’s Celebration of September Figures
The Founding President of the UP Tradition Institute, Razak Kojo Opoku, has asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its political tradition hold the best records when it comes to achieving single-digit inflation in Ghana’s economic history.
His statement comes in reaction to what he described as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) “unnecessary noise” over the 9.4 percent inflation recorded in September 2025, which the governing party has hailed as a major milestone under President John Mahama’s administration.
According to Dr. Opoku, historical data shows that the UP/NPP tradition consistently outperformed NDC administrations in delivering single-digit inflation, with the lowest ever achieved in Ghana’s history being 3.03 percent under Prime Minister K.A. Busia in 1970.
He outlined the performance of various governments:
Busia’s Government (UP Tradition): 3.03% in 1970, 7.32% in 1969, and 9.56% in 1971.
Kufuor’s Government (NPP): 9.36% in 2002.
Akufo-Addo’s Government (NPP): 7.81% in 2018, 7.14% in 2019, 9.89% in 2020, and 9.97% in 2021.
Rawlings’ Government (NDC): 4.87% in 1999, 10.06% in 1992.
Mills’ Government (NDC): 8.73% in 2011.
Mahama’s First Term (2013–2016): Never recorded single-digit inflation, with the best rate being 11.67% in 2013.
Dr. Opoku noted that September 2025 marks the first time President Mahama’s administration has recorded a single-digit inflation rate, but argued that this achievement pales in comparison to the NPP’s consistent record.
He ranked Ghana’s leaders by inflation performance as follows: Busia (best), Akufo-Addo (2nd), Rawlings (3rd), Mills (4th), Kufuor (5th), and Mahama (6th).
“The facts are clear: NPP/UP tradition achieved the lowest single-digit inflation of 3.03%, while the NDC’s best was 4.87%,” he stressed, adding that unless Mahama’s government sustains single-digit inflation for a full term as Akufo-Addo did from 2018–2021, it cannot claim superiority in economic management.
Dr. Opoku expressed hope that the current administration will achieve its annual inflation target of 11% as stated in the 2025 Budget but insisted that “the NPP tradition remains the custodian of Ghana’s best single-digit inflation data.”
