Residents of Kumasi and surrounding communities are set to experience a temporary water supply interruption as Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Ashanti Region, prepares to shut down the Barekese Water Treatment Plant for essential upgrade works.
The scheduled shutdown, which will take place from Monday, March 17th to Wednesday, March 19th, 2025, is necessary to facilitate the installation of new interconnection pipelines and foot valves at the Suame roundabout. This critical upgrade aims to enhance the water distribution system and improve service delivery across the metropolis.
GWL has assured the public that engineers will work within the set timeframe to restore water supply as quickly as possible. The affected areas include Offinso, the entire Kumasi Metropolis, and surrounding communities.
In light of the temporary disruption, GWL is urging all essential service providers, particularly hospitals and schools, to make adequate water storage arrangements to mitigate the impact of the shutdown.
While acknowledging the inconvenience, GWL management emphasized that this upgrade is part of broader efforts to strengthen the region’s water supply system and address persistent distribution challenges.
“We deeply regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience of our valued customers. This project is crucial in ensuring a more efficient and reliable water supply for all,” the statement read.
Residents are encouraged to conserve water ahead of the shutdown and stay updated on further announcements from Ghana Water Limited.
