Keta Hospital Marks 100 Years with Promises of Expanded Healthcare Access

The Keta Municipal Hospital in the Volta Region has launched its centenary celebrations with renewed commitments from government and stakeholders to strengthen healthcare delivery across the municipality.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Wisdom Seade, the Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), announced that two Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds would be constructed in two different communities every year as part of efforts to bring healthcare closer to residents.

He explained that the initiative—an instruction from President John Dramani Mahama—directs all district assemblies to allocate 10 percent of their District Common Fund to the construction of CHPS compounds annually.
“This move will help reduce the difficulties people face in accessing healthcare and address preventable deaths and diseases,” Mr. Seade said.

The MCE added that Seva and Tengekope communities have been selected to benefit from the 2025 phase of the project, with land acquisition already in progress.
“Quality healthcare is the cornerstone of every nation’s development,” he stressed, adding that the NDC government remains committed to improving the well-being of citizens through accessible and well-equipped health facilities.

Mr. Seade also pledged the Assembly’s continued support to the Keta Municipal Hospital, appealing to individuals, corporate bodies, and philanthropists to join efforts in upgrading the hospital’s infrastructure and services.
He disclosed that the government was considering public calls to rename the hospital after the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, a native of Keta, to honour his contributions to the area’s development.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Faruk Iddrissu, the Hospital Administrator, outlined some of the hospital’s pressing challenges, including inadequate facilities at the laundry, dental, eye, and children’s wards, as well as the need for urgent renovation works to ensure effective service delivery.

He, however, acknowledged several support initiatives that have enhanced operations at the hospital. These include:

The government’s new Infectious Diseases Centre, now serving as a surgical ward and ICU.

The MTN Ghana Foundation’s 60-bed Maternity and Child Health Complex, which has significantly improved maternal and child health outcomes.

Donations and renovations from partners such as the Amiki Club, Duamenefa Foundation, and Glory Oil Limited led by Mr. Mawuko Dzikunu.

A major contribution from Togbi Tenge Dzokoto Gligui VII, Paramount Chief of Amugo-Vego and Dufia of Anyako-Konu, who fully set up a dialysis unit with consumables for the hospital.

The event also saw the unveiling of the official logo, cloth, and T-shirt for the 100th anniversary celebration scheduled for next year.

Mr. Seade expressed optimism that with sustained collaboration among government, traditional authorities, development partners, and the private sector, Keta would soon become a model for community-centered healthcare delivery in Ghana.
