State Moves to Seize Assets of Former NAFCO Boss Amid Corruption Probe

The government has intensified its crackdown on alleged corruption at the National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) with the freezing of assets belonging to the company’s former Chief Executive Officer, Abdul-Wahab Hanan, and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni.

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, announced the development at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, stating that the move was part of broader efforts to trace, preserve, and recover state funds suspected to have been misappropriated during Mr. Hanan’s tenure.

According to Dr. Ayine, investigators have uncovered multiple assets allegedly linked to the couple, including a GHS 10 million fixed deposit account at Republic Bank’s Labone Branch. The amount has been frozen pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.

In addition to the frozen funds, the state has also seized several vehicles and over 61 luxury handbags reportedly belonging to the former NAFCO boss and his wife.

“We have frozen all these assets and will be taking steps to have them confiscated by the state in the course of the criminal proceedings,” Dr. Ayine stated, emphasizing that the action was necessary to prevent the dissipation of suspected proceeds of crime.

Investigators have also identified a number of high-value properties allegedly linked to the couple across Accra and Tamale, including:

  • A 17-bedroom boutique hotel at Gumani in Tamale, registered under Fa-Hausa Company Limited and disguised through a $250,000 franchise deal with Villa Monticello;

  • A four-bedroom bungalow at Dzorwulu, Accra, valued at GHS 4.1 million;

  • A three-storey building (formerly operating as Chicken Republic) at Estate Junction, Tamale;

  • A five-bedroom mansion at Kanvili, Dorado Street, Tamale;

  • A three-bedroom house at Kpalsi, Tamale;

  • A one-storey building at No. 10 Selby Gardens, Achimota, Accra;

  • 27 acres of land at Estate Junction, Tamale; and

  • 29 acres of land near the Workers College, Tamale.

Dr. Ayine noted that these findings form part of an extensive investigation into financial irregularities and alleged money laundering schemes uncovered at NAFCO. He reaffirmed government’s resolve to ensure that public officials found complicit in corruption face full legal consequences.

The Attorney General’s revelations come amid heightened scrutiny of public sector accountability and the government’s broader anti-corruption drive, which has seen an increase in asset recovery actions against former state officials.
