The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cautioned the public to disregard widely circulated claims suggesting that the results of more than 34,000 candidates from the recent examinations have been withheld.
WAEC insists it has not released any official figures regarding withheld results, dismissing the viral reports as misleading and inaccurate.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, described the information as false and unverified, explaining that the Council is still reviewing cases of irregularities recorded during the examinations.
“We have not released any official statement… There are a lot of factual inaccuracies in what is circulating. We are still dealing with issues and have not concluded investigations,” Mr. Kapi stated.
He noted that despite deploying an enhanced monitoring system this year to protect the integrity of the exams, some cases of malpractice were detected — but stressed that no definitive numbers have been announced.
“It is not true that we have withheld the results of over 34,000 candidates. We haven’t put any figures out,” he emphasized.
The false reports claimed that 34,563 candidates’ results had been held over alleged collusion, impersonation, and use of unauthorised materials — but WAEC says the rumor did not originate from its offices.
WAEC has urged students, parents, and the general public to rely only on official communications from the Council, warning that misinformation causes unnecessary anxiety and confusion.
The Council says once its Examinations Committee concludes the review process, an official statement will be issued regarding any sanctions or withheld results.
