Nungua Residents Question Impact of ORAL as Prosecutions Remain Elusive

Residents of Nungua in the Greater Accra Region have shared differing views on the results of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, with many expressing disappointment over what they describe as limited visible outcomes, particularly the absence of prosecutions.

In a random survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency, residents said while they initially welcomed ORAL as a bold accountability measure aimed at recovering misappropriated public resources, expectations had not been fully met. Several interviewees said the lack of court action against alleged corrupt officials had weakened public confidence in the initiative.

Mr Daniel Tetteh, a trader, said he expected the operation to culminate in prosecutions, noting that public assurances had created hope that those accused of looting state funds would face the law. Ms Priscilla Mensah, a public sector worker, also questioned the effectiveness of the exercise, arguing that without enforcement, investigations alone do little to deter corruption.

Others said the outcome of ORAL had deepened public scepticism about political accountability. Mr Kwame Aboagye, a commercial driver, said similar anti-corruption efforts in the past had failed to deliver concrete results, leaving many citizens doubtful about reform promises. However, some residents urged patience, with Madam Efua Lamptey, a retired nurse, noting that legal processes take time and should be guided by evidence rather than public pressure.

Younger residents also weighed in on the implications for civic trust. A university student, Mr Samuel Ofori, said unfulfilled promises risk discouraging youth engagement in democratic processes. Meanwhile, entrepreneur Mr Confidence Nutsuga said although the operation initially came with regular public updates, the silence around recoveries and next steps had created the impression that the initiative had stalled, calling for greater transparency to rebuild public confidence.
