The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is moving to consolidate regulatory oversight and enhance consumer protections in Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry, with CEO Mr. Godwin Edudzi Tameklo highlighting a “reset agenda” to drive efficiency, safety, and local content growth.
Speaking at the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference at the University of Ghana, Mr. Tameklo reflected on his first year in office, describing 2025 as a period of “foundation building” for the sector. Appointed in January 2025, the energy and legal expert has spearheaded initiatives aimed at stabilizing the market while safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians.
Under his leadership, the NPA has strengthened local content policies to ensure Ghanaian firms capture a larger share of the petroleum value chain. The Authority has also overseen infrastructural expansion, including a 6,000 metric ton liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage facility expected to be commissioned by the end of March 2026.
Driver welfare has also been a priority, with the introduction of a Driver Remuneration Formula to address wage concerns for tanker operators, a measure aimed at improving safety and logistics across the distribution network.
“Our collective efforts have strengthened the Authority’s regulatory mandate and laid firm foundations for sustainable growth,” Mr. Tameklo said, adding that 2026 offers opportunities to further enhance efficiency across the downstream sector.
The NPA CEO also addressed ongoing debates in the petroleum market, including defending the fuel price floor policy against claims by oil marketing firms such as Star Oil. He stressed that maintaining minimum pricing is crucial to preventing predatory practices and ensuring market stability.
Additionally, Mr. Tameklo reiterated the Authority’s commitment to revitalizing the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to boost domestic refining capacity, reduce pressure on the cedi, and strengthen national energy independence.
Looking ahead, the NPA will focus on supporting Ghana’s 24-hour economy initiative, with a dedicated Steering Committee ensuring round-the-clock fuel availability and regulatory support for businesses operating continuously.
“Our goal is simple,” Mr. Tameklo said during a recent courtesy call from the Oti Regional House of Chiefs. “We are here to serve the nation with integrity and ensure every Ghanaian has access to affordable, high-quality energy.”
