Government Exceeds Treasury Bill Target Amid Declining Interest Rates

The government has once again surpassed its Treasury bill target, raising an additional GHS 514 million beyond its initial goal. This signals continued investor confidence in short-term government securities, despite a gradual decline in interest rates.

According to the latest auction results from the Bank of Ghana, the government aimed to raise GHS 8.26 billion but received total bids of GHS 8.77 billion, resulting in an oversubscription of 6.22%.

Breakdown of the Auction Results

  • The 91-day Treasury bill received GHS 6.2 billion in bids, with all offers accepted.
  • The 182-day bill attracted GHS 1.83 billion in bids, of which GHS 1.80 billion was accepted.
  • The 364-day bill saw GHS 1.2 billion tendered, but only GHS 746 million was accepted.

The continued demand for government securities reflects strong liquidity in the market and investor preference for safe, short-term instruments. However, the government remains focused on reducing borrowing costs.

Interest Rates on the Decline Interest rates on Treasury bills have been on a downward trajectory, with the latest auction showing significant reductions:

  • The 91-day bill dropped by 186 basis points to 15.88%.
  • The 182-day bill declined by 204 basis points to 16.93%.
  • The 364-day bill fell by 101 basis points, settling at 17.98%.

While rates are declining, the pace of reduction appears to have slowed as the government aims to balance investor returns with the need for affordable borrowing.

What’s Next? Looking ahead, the government has set a target of raising GHS 6.14 billion in the next auction. Market analysts suggest that investor appetite for Treasury bills will remain strong, but the focus will be on how the government manages its borrowing strategy amid declining yields and evolving economic conditions.

With inflation concerns still lingering and global economic uncertainties impacting fiscal policy, the government’s ability to sustain investor confidence while keeping borrowing costs low will be closely monitored in the coming months.
