Ghana’s political and economic spotlight turns to Parliament today as John Dramani Mahama delivers his State of the Nation Address (SONA), a constitutionally mandated speech expected to define the administration’s priorities for the year ahead.
The address, scheduled for February 27, will provide an official assessment of the country’s condition and set the tone for policy direction across key sectors, including the economy, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and energy.
Members of Parliament, senior government officials, diplomats, traditional authorities, and civil society representatives are expected to attend the session, which traditionally shapes national debate and legislative focus.
Economic management is likely to dominate the President’s remarks, with attention expected on inflation trends, public debt sustainability, revenue mobilisation, job creation, and broader macroeconomic stability. With cost-of-living concerns still prominent, the address is anticipated to outline strategies aimed at stimulating growth, attracting investment, and easing pressures on households and businesses.
Infrastructure delivery is also expected to feature prominently, with updates on road construction, housing projects, water systems, sanitation initiatives, and other public works. The President may also announce new development programmes designed to accelerate growth nationwide.
In education, reforms to enhance access, quality, and equity are likely to be highlighted, including investments in school infrastructure, teacher recruitment and training, and expansion of technical and vocational education.
Healthcare improvements are also expected to form part of the address, with anticipated updates on hospital expansion, recruitment of medical professionals, and efforts to strengthen the National Health Insurance Scheme.
As the nation awaits the speech, today’s SONA is expected not only to review the past year but also to signal the government’s strategic direction amid ongoing economic and social challenges.
