Mahama Hails $100bn GDP Milestone, Credits Currency Gains for Economic Surge

John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana’s economy has crossed the $100 billion threshold for the first time, describing the achievement as a defining moment in the country’s economic history.

Speaking during the 2026 State of the Nation Address, the President framed the milestone as evidence of broad-based recovery and renewed macroeconomic stability within his first year in office.

Central to the turnaround, he said, was the strengthening of the national currency. According to President Mahama, the cedi appreciated significantly against major international currencies — rising by 40.7% against the US dollar, 30.9% against the British pound, and 24% against the euro.

“We did not just arrest currency instability; we strengthened the cedi to put up a good fight against other currencies,” he stated.

The President attributed the economic expansion to coordinated fiscal and monetary measures aimed at stabilising the macroeconomic environment, restoring investor confidence, and stimulating growth across key sectors.

Surpassing the $100 billion GDP mark is expected to elevate Ghana’s standing among Africa’s largest economies and reinforce its attractiveness to foreign investors, while positioning the country for sustained long-term growth.
