As Ghana joined the global observance of Zero Discrimination Day, the Executive Director of GOSANET Foundation, Mr. Samuel Yao Atidzah, has called for stronger action against stigma and discrimination, particularly toward people living with HIV.
In a statement issued to mark the day, Mr. Atidzah emphasized that HIV status should never define an individual, stressing that dignity, respect and love must remain the foundation of society. He reminded the public that no one deserves to face exclusion or prejudice because of their health condition.
Zero Discrimination Day, initiated in 2014 by UNAIDS and observed annually on March 1 by the United Nations and partner organisations, promotes equality, inclusion and peace for all, regardless of age, gender, race or sexual orientation. This year’s theme, “People First: Standing United for Dignity, Equality and Inclusion,” reinforces the need to eliminate discriminatory laws, attitudes and practices, especially those linked to HIV and AIDS stigma.
Mr. Atidzah encouraged Ghanaians to unite in supporting people living with HIV in their communities and to promote acceptance rather than judgment. He also urged individuals to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health by knowing their HIV status.
He highlighted the availability of HIV self-testing kits, describing them as private, confidential, safe and empowering. According to him, taking responsibility for one’s health is a mark of strength, not shame.
He concluded with a call for both young and old to get tested, know their status and protect themselves and others, as part of a broader effort to build a more inclusive and compassionate society.
