The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reiterated his dedication to bringing lasting peace to Bawku, emphasizing ongoing efforts to engage key stakeholders in resolving the long-standing conflict.
During a courtesy visit by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and other Members of Parliament at the Manhyia Palace on Monday, March 17, 2025, the Asantehene addressed the current situation in Bawku, noting that while gun violence has subsided, meaningful dialogue is still necessary to achieve a sustainable resolution.
“We are still working on the Bawku issue. The gun violence has reduced, but the underlying issues remain. I have invited the leaders of the parties involved, including the Bawku Naaba and the Nayiri, and I have engaged with representatives of the Mossi and Hausa ethnic groups,” Otumfuo stated.
He further revealed that while the Nayiri was unwell and unable to attend discussions, a representative from his palace is expected to meet with him on Tuesday to continue peace efforts.
The Asantehene appealed to all factions involved to put down their weapons and engage in constructive discussions, stressing that armed conflict is not the solution to historical grievances.
“I want to urge everyone in Bawku to lay down their arms. I have asked all stakeholders to inform their people that the only way forward is dialogue. We are committed to addressing the historical challenges that fuel this conflict,” he emphasized.
With tensions in Bawku persisting despite several mediation attempts, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement is seen as a critical step toward fostering reconciliation and lasting peace. His influence and commitment to a peaceful resolution have been welcomed by many who hope for an end to the cycle of violence in the region.
Observers believe that continued dialogue and active engagement from traditional leaders, government officials, and community representatives will be vital in ensuring a peaceful and enduring resolution to the Bawku crisis.
